Timing Belts

What is this thing we here in the office or among people that we
know called the timing belt?
What does it have to do with time? Well its definitely a car part. It does have a lot
to do with
time in that it is the synchronized link between the engine crankshaft and the
camshaft. Much
like the old fan belt. It is made of rubber and has teeth on it to grip the pulleys.
Being made
of rubber it has a life expectancy. Most manufactures are at 60,000 miles, but some
have shorter
and longer service intervals. If this rubber item fails the engine will stop running
and in a lot of
cases will cause severe engine damage. Other causes of timing belt failures other
than age are,
fluid leaks on the belt such as oil and anti-freeze, dirty old oil
causing increased
friction stretching the belt, noisy worn pulley bearings, and engine overheating.
Below is an image of a engine piston coming up and hitting a valve
because of a timing belt failure. Want to talk about some internal damage!
